Mr Ian Walton, MA
Senior Head of Language
Head of German

Mr Ian Walton is Senior Head of Language and Head of German. He joined Brentwood School in 1993. He has an MA in Modern History and Modern Languages from St Peter’s College, Oxford University.  He teaches German, French and English and runs a number of foreign educational visits and School chess.

Mr John Bowley, MA Maîtrise

Mr John Bowley is currently teaching French, German, English and Critical and Creative Thinking. He joined Brentwood School in 2004, having previously taught at Abingdon School and Bromsgrove School. He has a degree in Modern Languages (French and German) from St Anne’s College, Oxford University, a Maîtrise in French as a Foreign Language from Strasbourg University, and a P.G.C.E. from Nottingham University. In addition to his teaching, he responsible for Oxbridge Entry and Speech Day Prizes and is a 2nd Form tutor.

Mrs Jing Rodgers, MSc
Head of Chinese

Mrs Rodgers is Head of Chinese. She joined Brentwood School in 2014, having previously worked at City of London School for Girls and St Edward’s School.  She has a Master degree in Science, Culture and Communication and dual bachelor degrees in Applied Languages as well as Business and Trade.  In addition to teaching in the Senior School, she also works in the Prep School.  She loves Chinese and English literature and films, hiking, cycling and cooking.

Mr Glenn Smith, BA, MA
Head of Spanish

Mr Smith joined Brentwood School in 2016, having previously taught at Havering Sixth Form College.

Mrs Marisa Taylor, MA
Head of Italian
Teacher of French

Mrs Marisa Taylor is Head of Italian and also teaches French and language development. She joined the school in 1995 having previously taught at Goffs School in Cheshunt which specialised in teaching KS3 subjects in French. She studied French and Italian at the University of London,UCL, Paris- Sorbonne and  the Institute of Education. Mrs Taylor introduced the study of Italian within the IB diploma programme and many of her students have gone on to university to read Italian. Mrs Taylor has led diverse cultural and musical trips across the two languages

Miss Katie Allen, BA
Teacher of French & Italian

Miss Katie Allen is currently teaching French KS3-5 and Italian at KS5. She also teaches Language Development at KS3.  This is Miss Allen’s first teaching post having graduated from the University of Oxford in 2011 with a degree in Modern Languages, (French and Italian.)  She subsequently undertook a PGCE at Homerton College, Cambridge.  In addition to her teaching, Miss Allen is a member of the 1st year Pastoral Team and is in charge of the 1st year Normandy Trip.

Miss Reina Campbell, BA
Teacher of French & Spanish

Miss Reina Campbell is currently teaching Spanish and Creative & Critical Thinking. She joined Brentwood School in 2008. She has a degree in Hispanic Studies from King's College, London and then gained her PGCE in Modern Foreign Languages (Spanish and French) from the Institute of Education, London. In addition to her teaching, she is a 4th and 5th year tutor and organises the Spanish Exchange trip to Seville.

Mrs Laetitia Dearmer-Decup, BA

Mrs Dearmer-Decup is currently teaching French and German. She joined Brentwood School in 2004 having previously taught at St Martin’s School. She has an English Literature and Civilisation Degree from the Université Paul Valéry in Montpellier (France). In addition to teaching French and German, she also teach Creative and Critical Thinking and Learning Development. She is a 5th year tutor and assists with the 2nd year junior clubs.

Mrs Nicola Jenkin, BA, MA

Senior Deputy Head (Pastoral)

Mrs Jenkin is Senior Deputy Head responsible for pastoral care.  She is the Designated Safeguarding Lead for the Senior School and is a member of the German department.  Mrs Jenkin holds an MA from Cambridge in Modern Languages and started her teaching career in 1989. Before joining Brentwood in September 2013 she gained experience as a resident boarding tutor at King Edward’s School, Witley, worked as a modern languages teacher at St Albans’ High School for Girls, the Almaty International School in Kazakhstan and Merchant Taylors’ Boys’ School and was then appointed as Head of German and Deputy Head of Sixth Form at St Helen’s School, Northwood. She moved to Sir William Perkins’s School, Chertsey, in 2007, to become Head of Sixth Form and the member of the Senior Leadership team responsible for teacher training.

Miss Christine Lacotte, BA
Teacher of French

Mme Lacotte is a native French speaker from South of France who studied English and Russian at Universite Toulouse le Mirail.  Before completing her teacher training she worked as a translator/interpreter for Social Services and the Immigration Department. She joined Brentwood School in 2014. In summer she likes to go to France where she enjoys cycling and spending time with her friends at Jazz in Marciac. She also loves reading both French and English literature.

Mrs Irene Penalver-Edwards, BA
Teacher of 

Mrs Penalver- Edwards went to the Universities of Murcia and Essex and completed her teacher training at Anglia Ruskin University in Chelmsford. She joined Brentwood School in 2004 after working in a school in Hertfordshire. She loves reading and going to the cinema.

Mrs Malika Power, MA Maîtrise
Teacher of French & Spanish

Mrs Power (Lane) Joined Brentwood in 2017, having previously taught at Hurtwood House (a boarding school focusing exclusively on 6th Form) and the Duke of Kent School. Prior to teaching in Surrey, Mrs Power completed her PGCE in French and Spanish at the University of Birmingham. In addition to her teaching, Mrs Power is a member of the 5th Year pastoral team.

Mr Rhodri Pritchard, BA
Teacher of French & Spanish

Languages have always been in Mr Pritchard’s blood. His love of France, its tongue, landscapes and cuisine, came from his French mother, whilst his father, a lecturer in Spanish and exacting grammarian, introduced him to that language’s riches. He not only studied these languages at university but lived in France and Spain for considerable periods. Here he pursued his other passion - rugby - and was instrumental in re-establishing the now thriving sport at Brentwood after a decade’s hiatus. Mr Pritchard is a strong believer in cultivating practical language skills and has led dozens of MFL trips and visits to France and Spain, including sports tours and a thriving French rugby exchange

Mrs Solange Roast, BEd
Teacher of French & Spanish

Mrs Roast is currently teaching French and Spanish. She joined Brentwood School in 2000, having previously taught at Gaynes School. She has an English degree from Caen University in France and then gained a Bachelor of Education from Anglia Polytechnic University. In addition to her teaching, she is a 4th & 5th year tutor and organises our annual French-Rugby exchange with Collège Saint Vincent De Tyrosse near Biarritz in France. Mrs Roast is a keen sportswoman, enjoys travelling, learning about new cultures and new languages.

Mrs Maria Watts-Jiménez, BA
Teacher of Spanish

Mrs María Watts-Jiménez is a Spanish teacher, having completed her teaching qualification at Brentwood. She joined the school in 2014, having previously taught privately and through schools and adult community colleges in Hertfordshire and Essex. She has a Psychology degree from Santo Tomas University in Colombia. In addition to her teaching role, she is a 1st year form tutor.

Mrs Fabienne Hanley, DEUG
French Languages Assistant

Mrs Fabienne Hanley is currently teaching the 6th formers to prepare them for their French oral examinations. She joined Brentwood School in September 2014, having previously taught at Gosfield School for a year and at Chelmsford County High School for Girls for 11 years where she also worked as a cover teacher and invigilator. She has a degree in Psychology from the University of Dijon

Mr Peter Laraway started at Brentwood School in 2013 as a part-time Technical Assistant in the Modern Foreign Languages Department.

Mrs Heike Sheppard
German Languages Assistant

Mrs Heike Sheppard is the German Language Assistant. She is a native speaker and joined Brentwood School in 1997, has taught within Adult Community Learning Essex and held a subject management position within this organisation. She obtained her teaching qualification with City and Guilds.
