We have a reputation for developing broad minds and intellects. Just as impressive is our knack for building self-confidence. It is this that takes a Brentwood pupil where they want to go in life.
Innovative teaching is fundamental to our approach. Take a subject such as Mathematics; our pupils learn numeracy skills by doing and talking. The language of Maths is an integral part of the learning process. There are high expectations for both classwork and homework and as pupils progress up the School, they are encouraged to be more responsible and self-disciplined in how they organise their studies.
We teach a wide ranging curriculum and our pupils naturally develop an interest in learning that stretches beyond the boundaries of the school day. Teachers combine expertise in their field with a love of their subject, so lessons are full of energy and depth. With an average class size of 20, staff are able to play close attention to the development of each child and adapt what they deliver to an individual’s needs. Children who are particularly able in a subject are challenged to go further with their skills and ideas and those who might be finding something harder to understand are given focused help.
To ease transition to the Senior School, pupils have a ‘Taster day’ at the end of Year Five. Pupils will already be familiar with the environment from having spent time sharing the facilities and parents attend an informal evening event when they can meet the Headmaster and senior teaching staff. Preparation for the Senior School entrance examination begins in Year Six.
At the end of their time at the Preparatory, pupils are full to the brim with wonderful memories and ready to take confident strides to their Senior School.
